It is a tire PSI tester, that you leave on your valve stem. It is color coded so at a glance you can tell if your tires PSI is too low/too much/just right. I don't check my PSI as much as I should, this is perfect for the laziness in all of us! It uses a hex nut at the bottom of it to secure it, and prevent theft. I don't know how well this will work out in the end, but they've already met their goal and still have 39 days to go, I'm thinking about backing it to get a set of 4 to test out. Doesn't really make sense to have these on a new car since TPMS already does this, but our older cars it's perfect.
EDIT: I also forgot to put, that on their kickstarter they are saying that you can fill up your tire without taking this off of the valve stem.
At a glance kickstarter (also photo credit)

These used to be in every auto store.

As long as it isn't too heavy like some of those chrome ones people that also have trucknuts like to put on, they, over time, break the valve stems, lol.
I do like the idea though!

Holy shit I didn't even know those existed! How well do those work?

Never tried them personally. I seem to remember hearing that they work OK.

Yeah, they look to be pretty light, someone else had posted that things like this already exist, so I'm definitely going to keep an eye on these to see what makes them better/worse.

The biggest problem you'll have with this is that the threads on the valve stem are required to hold the pressure 24/7. So the likehood of leaks goes way up.

Yeah one of the reviews said after two years they broke, but that's two years. The cool thing about these is apparently you don't have to take them off to fill up your tire.

Pfft, this is 2014 man! We invent things to allow us to be lazy as shit!

And im proud of that! Because...
Take that.... Macedonia!

Yeah, it definitely is a cause to worry cause that stuff can leave you stranded somewhere with a surprise flat, but if these things are sealed right, and has a good way of securing it to the stem, it could work flaw free for a few years.

Yeah, I was about to post that this is not a new invention.

Some guys used to have these type of things for service trucks up in here in Canada, they don't do well in the cold.

Yes!

I am pretty sure sooner or later someone will come up with a cheap TPMS valve and some cheap bluetooth TPMSensors for older cars that you can use with your smartphone.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:08 |

Yeah, I've looked up putting in a TPMS system in my 944, but the best cheapest still was like 250. Until that day of awesome TPMS phone apps, we have these!
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:08 |

Yeah I would imagine that they can get stuck by the cold pretty easily, but once the air in the tire heats up, it could heat this thing up and allow it to work. But I would imagine that would cut their life drastically short, going through too many cold/hot cycles like that.

This color blind guy doesn't really think they'd work all that well.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:13 |

Ya its the cold to hot changes in the pressure 4 or 5 times a day that buggers them up. Good idea though.

We always had these things on our backup farm trucks that sat in the barn. A lot quicker to do a walk around when you need one then measure all the tires individually. Didn't use them on our main stuff though because failure = flat.

Agreed.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:38 |

Yeah, they have to be made really well so they can last, but if these guys got it then they could have some good stuff on their hands
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:45 |

They seriously have a kickstarter going for that? These things have existed for years lol. There are a million of those things out there.
Eventually they sit in the same position and get stuck, so you have no idea if the tire is low or not.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:46 |
|
Yeah, but they seem to be trying different things with these, I don't know if others do it, but these you can still fill your tires with them on.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 11:51 |
|
...So you can remove the cap's cap to fill it up? Innovative. (others do it already.

Like I said, didn't know if others did it already. But these guys already past their goal, with another 39 days to go. Their stuff is going to start getting to the backers allegedly around September of this year, so we will see pretty soon how good they really are. I mean, if they didn't think it could sell and they could make it better, I don't see why they would even bother making them, since there are tons out there already.

Idk. I can't see this working out for them. Vehicles are required to have TPMS systems, so the percentage of vehicles WITHOUT them is getting smaller every day. This means they are developing a product (which exists already and is saturated) for a dead and shrinking market. That plus the fact the patents exist for this same thing dating back to the 1920's without ever catching on makes me think that most people aren't interested in goofy looking valve caps.
Also worth noting (and I find amusing) is that the picture you posted is a car equipped with TPMS and their fancy pressure caps. (you can tell by the chamfered brass valve body), so the "inventors" are definitely aware of this lol.

Well, they had to show it somehow. And to be honest, most cars that have TPMS, it's just that shitty TPMS that activates that stupid little light and doesn't give any extra info, unless you get a better aftermarket one or buy the better model car. These measure a specific PSI that you want, and to be honest things like these don't really catch on with the every day, not giving a shit about cars public, it'll be more for car people who want to keep their PSI at a an exact amount all the time. But either way, I'm not slinging this product, I thought that I would share it, if you don't like it and don't think that it will succeed, that's cool, but I thought it was a cool thing, and an interesting way to approach something that has been done. Who gives a shit if it may or may not succeed at this point, it's still in kick starter, it's the fact that someone is trying something different, I mean hell, it may not even come off the drawing board to the kick starter backers.

That still isn't the same thing as this, what that appears to be is an actual tire air valve, that has the added benefit of this thing. This is something you put onto the air valve. Go look at their kick starter, they've gotten awards at SEMA (apparently), they've had plenty of exposure, if they were going to get sued it would have happened by now.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 12:18 |
|
I'm not saying they're going to get sued, I'm just saying these things have been around since the dawn of time. Might as well patent the wheel.

Yeah, I mean, a lot of things on vehicles have been around for forever, but other people take those concepts or actual products and improve upon them. All I am saying is, this may be something to keep an eye out for, maybe it will succeed and maybe not, it won't get mainstream success that one is for sure. But who knows. They reached their goal in just a few weeks, granted it was only 20k, but still.
